Panini is not just the company that produced and distributed the popular stickers (which we used to buy when we were kids, using up our entire allowance), they are also delicious Italian snacks.
While the singular of panini is panino, this term is hardly ever used because after finishing one, everyone usually immediately wants another one.
It consists of an authentic Italian roll, which should not be confused with a typical dinner roll. It may be made from wheat flour, semolina flour, cornmeal, or other mixtures. The size and style varies according to the region it is produced in. Sometimes it is artfully braided or twisted into other forms, sometimes they remind one of French baguettes. The fillings may also vary. In Italy, panini are usually filled with ham, cheese, sausage, and lettuces.
We also love panini with tomatoes, mozzarella, and prosciutto. But it is toasting that makes our Italian snacks extra delicious. 2 to 3 minutes in the oven, and the plain, filled roll transforms into a wonderfully crispy, yet tender meal. Add a classic Italian espresso to it, and you are transported to holiday in Italy.
